Full-Time Director, Total Compensation & Talent Acquisition


Monday to Friday, occasional evening and weekend work



Reporting to the Vice President, Human Resources, the Director, Total Compensation & Talent Acquisition oversees the effective and efficient operations of the compensation, benefits, pension, HRIS and talent acquisition portfolios. The Director ensures best practices and compliance with established legislation demonstrating leadership in: developing total compensation and talent acquisition methodologies and approaches; leading the implementation of new projects and initiatives; and directing the service delivery of the compensation, benefits, pension, HRIS and talent acquisition portfolios. As a member of the Human Resource Leadership team, the Director leads the strategy of all total compensation and talent acquisition programs to successfully attract, motivate, and retain talent.

• Develops compensation and talent acquisition strategies & programs that enable Grand River Hospital (GRH) to effectively compete for and retain talented human capital in support of its strategic initiatives and quality patient outcomes
• Develops, recommends to the VP, Human Resources, and implements sustainable compensation practices, policies and structures, including job evaluation systems, salary structures and pay practices for union and non-union compensation programs; collaborates with and service as an advisor to leadership on matters pertaining to broad-based compensation
• Provides leadership and expertise in the administration and governance of multiple plans, including Grand River Hospital’s KW Pension Plan and HOOPP; supports vendor management of the outsourced pension administration service; and acts as a key liaison between the hospital and pension actuary, custodian and legal counsel for pension governance
• Manages plan selection and administration of all employee benefit programs such as extended health, dental, life, leaves of absence, and service recognition awards
• Oversees the designs, implementation, maintenance and integrity of HRIS data, developing consistent data management processes, and driving the long-term data management and HRIS systems strategy
• Directs the development of, and provides leadership support of the talent acquisition strategy




• Undergraduate Degree in a related field; Master’s Degree preferred
• Ten years of progressively responsible experience in compensation & benefits with exposure to the management of defined benefit pension plans, including 5 years of experience in management working in a fast-paced, complex unionized environment
• Certified Compensation Professional (CCP) or Certified Employee Benefits (CEBS) designation an asset
• Experience developing and managing budgets, including variance reporting and cost control procedures analysis


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Superior knowledge and understanding of compensation, benefits and talent acquisition as it relates to collective agreements, legislation, trends and best practices
• Extensive experience with single and multi-employer defined benefit pension plans, including pension legislation, governance and employer administration & reporting responsibilities
• Experience developing, implementing, directing and monitoring a comprehensive compensation strategy (including job evaluation systems, salary structures and pay practices for non-union and union compensation programs), that attracts, retains, motivates and rewards a high performance workforce
• Experience developing, implementing, directing and monitoring a comprehensive talent acquisition strategy, including a robust candidate sourcing strategy (technical and social solutions), selection process and recruitment metrics
• Strong leadership skills with experience planning and implementing Human Resources programs, policies and procedures; experience leading the implementation of a human resources information system (HRIS) preferred
• Strong reasoning and financial analysis skills with an understanding of human resources information systems; good understanding of appropriate audit processes for quality control, equity issues, data integrity and reporting purposes
• Visionary leader that is able to analyze business needs and think strategically in order to establish and implement long-term business organizational strategies
• Demonstrated experience acting as a change agent, effectively managing in an ever-changing environment
• Courageous leader who can consistently engage, guide and motivate a multidisciplinary team in times of opportunity and ambiguous situations with proven ability to be a team player and work collaboratively
• Ability to establish trust of leadership team; build effective influential relationships both inside and outside the organization at all levels with an emphasis on customer service, using a high degree of integrity and professionalism, diplomacy and tact
• Solid organization, management and human relation skills, and a style which exhibits maturity, leadership, and sensitivity
• Excellent oral and written communication skills to present viewpoints and ideas effectively
• Demonstrated excellent consultative, negotiating and problem solving skills to work with stakeholders to shape solutions under pressure and with conflicting demands
• Strong computer skills in MS Office Programs (i.e. Word, Excel)
