    Full Time Chief Practice Information Officer (CPIO)

    Monday to Friday - Days



    The Chief Practice Information Officer (CPIO) will be member of a registered health profession (non-physician) who will provide leadership in the planning and implementation of the new clinical information system (PRISM) for Grand River Hospital and St. Mary’s General Hospital. The position will report to the Vice President, Quality, Performance Management and Clinical System Transformation, Grand River Hospital and the Chief Nursing Executive at St. Mary’s General Hospital with a formal liaison to the Chief Nursing Executive at Grand River Hospital. The primary objective of the CPIO is to provide leadership to and facilitate engagement with the non-physician clinical staff in the development and implementation of a shared hospital information system for Grand River Hospital and St. Mary’s General Hospital and potentially all Waterloo Wellington hospitals in the future. The CPIO will advocate for evidence based practice and standardization that supports design, implementation and sustainability of the system to support patient care.

    The CPIO will play a key role in facilitating collaboration between information systems (IS)/information technology (IT), clinicians and the broader clinical community and is an integral member of the information management team bringing a strategic, clinical based focus to the implementation and support of health information systems.



    • The CPIO will actively participate in the building of the infrastructure for the development, delivery and adoption of the computerized practitioner order entry system (CPOE)
    • Provide clinician leadership to the health information systems (HIS) replacement initiative
    • Advocate, utilizing evidence based methodologies, to members of the clinical staff, for the advantages which can be made available to patients through the effective application of information technologies in both hospitals
    • Engage members of the clinical staff in the development of a learning program reflective of the varying needs of clinicians and offering multiple approaches to achieving competency in the use of products to be deployed within the hospitals
    • Prepare and deploy the learning program required to support clinical staff in transitioning to new clinical information system



    • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, public administration, health care administration or a related field
    • Masters in health informatics preferred 
    • Equivalent to five years of increasingly responsible leadership experience in a complex health system environment
    • Member in good standing of a Regulated Health Profession 
    • Experience with the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MOHLTC) Digital Health Strategy an asset
    • Demonstrated experience implementing informatics in clinical practices across the continuum of care
    • Experience working with health information systems 
    • Experience leading large scale organizational change initiatives
    • Demonstrated experience with implementation of evidence based methodologies in clinical settings
    • Experience working with project management methodologies and clinical process analysis
    • Excellent critical thinking and decision-making skills
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders
